Clearing the Western Wall Plaza Following the Six-Day War

On the nights of June 10 and 11, just three days after capturing East Jerusalem during the Six-Day War, Israeli authorities bulldozed and razed the 700-year-old Moroccan Quarter (also known as the Mughrabi Quarter).

The goal was to clear the area directly in front of the Kotel (Western Wall). Prior to the demolition, the alleyway facing the wall was extremely narrow. By removing the historic neighborhood, space was cleared to create the large open-air Western Wall Plaza that exists today, restoring Jewish access to their most sacred site after nearly two decades of being cut off.
