Captured in Jerusalem in 1905, this photograph documents the Ceremony of the Holy Fire, one of the most important annual traditions in Eastern Christianity.

Held each year at the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Holy Saturday - the day after Good Friday and at the beginning of Easter celebrations - the ceremony commemorates the belief that a sacred flame miraculously appears inside the Holy Tomb chapel.

For centuries, pilgrims from across the Christian world have gathered in Jerusalem to witness and carry the flame, making the event one of the city’s most enduring religious traditions.
