Long before the modern promenade, luxury hotels, and bustling beach culture, this is what the coastline of Tel Aviv looked like in the very early 1920s.

Captured by photographer Frank Scholten, this incredible archival image catches Tel Aviv at a critical historical turning point. In 1921, Tel Aviv officially separated from the ancient port city of Jaffa to become an independent township. Led by its first mayor, Meir Dizengoff, the young city was experiencing its first massive wave of development, rapidly transforming from a quiet garden suburb built on sand dunes into a bustling Hebrew cultural hub.
