During the second part of the 19th century, Jerusalem started to expand, and new neighborhoods were built outside the old city after thousands of years in which the residents of Jerusalem lived between the old walls.

Edmund Allenby (1861 - 1936) was a British military officer who became famous during World War 1 for conquering the Land of Israel and Jerusalem. These areas were under the control of the Ottoman Empire for hundreds of years.
